Mongolian music! Yes, I've been visiting the library's Naxos database again. This morning, while updating the political section of the Carnegie collection, I listened to Mongolian Music from Buryatia by the Badma Khanda Ensemble. This collection of mostly traditional Mongolian music is very pleasing--several staff members commented on it as they passed by. Some of the music is gentle, quiet melody that makes a nice background to work or study. One fun song opens by setting up a musical phrase and rhythm that sends just like an old Western--it serves as a reminder that the Mongolians lived life on horseback for centuries, extending right into the present days. Who knows, maybe we got that movie rhythmic theme from them! If you would like to try this, once you are in Naxos, select the world genre, then skip to the M's and look for it by Mongolian Music from Buryatia.
