The Grapes of Wrath

I have been reading The Grapes of Wrath,  or rather listening to the audio version the featured book for Jackson’s Big Read.

I read this book in high school; at least I think I read it in high school.  I am sure I read it but I don’t remember when and I really don’t remember much about the book, I do remember parts of the book as I read them.  I am finding out that I really enjoy Steinbeck’s writing style, even if the subject is depressing.  I love the narrator of this edition, his voice is rich and soothing but he uses different voices for different characters.

I also attended Rick Wartzman’s presentation about his book Obscene in the Extreme: The Burning and Banning of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.  I learned a few things at his presentation, I didn't realize that the big farmers, and even some of the migrant workers  did not like Steinbeck's book and wanted it banned.

There are still some activities going on this week and next.  Including discussion groups and the young poets contest awards
