I love a good action scifi--but not Oblivion. This derivative film features moments that seem familiar embedded in a tired plot. The momentum is slow throughout, and, even though production values are good, I can’t recommend this movie.
Tom Cruise stars as Jack, Tech 49, who works with Vika, his partner, to repair damage to equipment on a future, ravaged earth. Jack goes out in his heli and braves, alone, the dangers of Scavengers who might attack. Vika stays back at their luxurious floating base (complete with infinity pool) and coordinates with the huge orbital station that is harvesting energy.
The back story tells us that aliens destroyed the moon then tried to invade. Earth responded with nukes and won, but destroyed the planet. Humanity is heading to one of Saturn’s moons, and Vika and Jack will be going, too, soon. When a craft crashes, Jack goes to investigate, finding a human crew in suspension that includes a woman who has haunted his dreams. The predictable plot contains illogic, and the ending has huge holes. It’s a shame, really. Coulda been worth watching. ~ Tessa 2 out of 5. September 2013
