Nigeria seeks to conquer African video games market

Sun, 03/09/2014 - 1:02pm

It's a common enough scenario in Nigeria and across Africa: how to get rid of pesky mosquitoes whose buzzing disturbs sleep and whose bites can carry malaria and other diseases. Two Nigerian start-ups have tapped this -- and other aspects and quirks of daily life in Africa -- to create online and mobile phone video games that are winning fans around the world. Another, the highly popular "Okada Ride", has players guide a motorcycle-taxi driver around roadside street vendors, road-blocks and police in the notorious traffic of Lagos, a sprawling metropolis of nearly 20 million people. "What I like about Nigerian video games, it's one: the local content, because it tends to give you that everyday feel," said Chucks Olloh, 32, a big fan.

But let's not forget the many rappers who paved the way toward video game stardom, including Kanye, 50 Cent, and Wu-Tang Clan. Let's run down our favorite rapper-made or -sponsored video games, all of which are obviously must-plays.

Microsoft is getting ready to Scroogle Xbox owners

Fri, 03/07/2014 - 4:00pm

We’ve said in the past that Microsoft’s “Scroogled” campaign rings somewhat hollow to us because Microsoft has certainly not been above using its users’ data to sell more targeted ads. Now The Washington Post informs us that Microsoft is going to cobble together Xbox Live user profiles from “Microsoft user IDs and other public data” that it will then use to deliver targeted political ads on the Xbox Live dashboard based on what it thinks are users’ personal beliefs. Microsoft is also apparently pitching political campaigns to share their “own lists of voter e-mail addresses” so that “Microsoft can match the additional data with individual customer accounts for even more accurate voter targeting.” No Microsoft officials would comment on the

Fri, 03/07/2014 - 11:13am

"Titanfall" aims to crush its multiplayer opposition as fans don their hype-suits, Yoshi takes Baby Mario on another adventure in "Yoshi's New Island," and the brave tool up with swords and spells in the dangerous world of "Dark Souls II."

Ubisoft to unleash 'Watch Dogs' video game in May

Fri, 03/07/2014 - 5:09am

Ubisoft said Thursday that it will unleash hacker-themed video game "Watch Dogs" on May 27 in what could turn a disappointing launch delay into a smart marketing move. Shares in the publicly traded French company took a hit when it announced that "Watch Dogs" would not be released as originally planned in November of last year. In contrast, a May debut for "Watch Dogs" could take place when owners of new-generation PlayStation 4 or Xbox One consoles released late last year are hungry for fresh games to play. Versions of "Watch Dogs" will be available for current and previous generation PlayStation or Xbox consoles as well as for play on personal computers powered by Windows software.

Video games offer hope for autistic children

Fri, 03/07/2014 - 2:42am

Ashburn (United States) (AFP) - The game over, a beaming Sawyer and Michael, both 10, cheer and give each other a high-five. It is a small but significant reaction that experts say shows how children with autism can benefit from playing some computer games. The Steuart W. Weller Ashburn Elementary School in Virginia is one of the specialized centers in the United States testing Microsoft's popular Xbox game console, equipped with "Kinect." With Kinect, launched by Microsoft in 2010, kids can play videogames without controllers.

Head of Sony's North American PlayStation business to step down

Thu, 03/06/2014 - 5:29pm

Sony Corp said on Thursday that the chief executive and president of its North American videogame operations, Jack Tretton, who has played a crucial role in increasing its PlayStation business, will step down at the end of March. Sony said in a statement that Tretton, who has led its North American videogames division, Sony Computer Entertainment America, since 2006, resigned following a mutual agreement between them to "not renew their contractual relationship." "As one of the founding members of the executive team, Tretton played a pivotal role in launching all PlayStation platforms in North America," Sony said in its statement. The division's executive vice president and chief operating officer, Shawn Layden, will succeed Tretton starting on April 1, Sony said. Tretton has worked with Sony Computer Entertainment America since its inception in 1995.

Here’s why Xbox One’s Titanfall might have been even more amazing on PS4

Thu, 03/06/2014 - 11:40am

Titanfall is easily one of the mostly hotly anticipated Xbox exclusives of early 2014, but would this awesome mech-style first-person shooter have made an even better PlayStation 4 game? The title, developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, takes place on a worn-torn planet and pits players against each other in head-to-head online multiplayer battles. Early reviews of the Titanfall beta for the Xbox One have been quite positive, but one industry watcher has raised a fairly interesting point that ponders if the title might have made an even better PlayStation 4 game. Respawn’s Titanfall for the Xbox One is, in short, awesome. You can read BGR’s full hands-on preview of Titanfall for the Xbox One here. But as Forbes contributor

Video games target Japan's silver generation

Thu, 03/06/2014 - 6:41am

At a nursing home in suburban Tokyo, 88-year-old Saburo Sakamoto darts his fingers energetically to catch characters that appear on a touch screen in front of him. The nursing home is run by an offshoot of Namco Bandai, the company behind 1980s arcade phenomenon PacMan, whose pill-popping escapades helped bring video games to a mass youth market. Now the firm is part of a small, but growing band of groups developing video games and home computer entertainment for the so-called "silver generation" -- Japan's burgeoning army of elderly people, who are living longer and healthier lives than ever before. Japan's population has been declining since 2007 and the country is greying, with one of the world's lowest birth rates and highest life expectancies.

PlayStation 4 sales fall off in Japan after a stellar first week

Wed, 03/05/2014 - 2:53pm

PlayStation fever went international as the PS4 launched to huge sales in Japan last month, but after an impressive performance in its first week, the next seven days were worryingly deflated. 4gamer shares the latest report from Media Create, which shows PS4 unit sales have dropped to 65,685 from the high-water mark of 322,083 last week. According to PlayStation LifeStyle, those figures represent the second lowest week 2 sales of any recent console launch, including the Vita, the 3DS and the Wii U. Supply constraints are likely a factor, and the PS4 also reached Japan outside of the holiday season, but whatever the reason, Japan’s gamers aren’t adopting Sony’s new system nearly as fast as other recent consoles. The PS4 remains

Sony shamed for ‘lying’ to PlayStation 4 owners

Wed, 03/05/2014 - 12:40pm

Native full HD 1080p gaming was one of the many promises of Sony’s new PlayStation 4 console and in many instances, it will deliver. A recent report revealed that one popular game that was being touted as “a 1080p 60 FPS monster” hasn’t delivered on its promise, however, and gamers are now lashing out as a result. Last November ahead of the title’s release, Sony wrote in a blog post that Killzone Shadow fall features a “competitive multiplayer mode” that supports up to 24 players and “runs at native 1080p and 60 fps.” As it turns out, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In single player mode, Killzone Shadow Fall runs at a full 1080p. In multiplayer mode, however,

This is the worst PlayStation 4 game so far

Tue, 03/04/2014 - 1:45pm

As PlayStation 4 sales scream past 6 million units globally, it’s becoming increasingly important for developers to pick up the pace and fuel gamers’ insatiable need for great new titles. This console generation is still very new, so early launches have a good chance of flying off the shelves since there isn’t much competition out there yet. One PlayStation 4 game that likely won’t be flying off the shelves, however, is Basement Crawl. Sony’s PS4 now has nearly 50 available games. And among them, Basement Crawl has been deemed the worst. The Bomberman-style title was released just last week, and several bugs were discovered almost immediately after it launched. The game’s creator, Bloober Team, issued an apology but the damage has

HBO Go available on the PlayStation 3 starting today

Tue, 03/04/2014 - 1:30pm

It’s a generation behind, but it’s finally arrived. Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog that the HBO Go app will be available to PlayStation 3 owners starting on Tuesday. In January, HBO announced that the app would finally be coming to the PS3, nearly two years after it hit the Xbox 360. The team is currently working to bring HBO Go to the new consoles, although there is no release date for the app on either the PS4 or Xbox One yet.  “Watch every episode of every season of the HBO’s best shows, including True Detective, Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones,” writes SCEA exec Phil Rosenberg. “Speaking of Game of Thrones, with the season 4 premiere airing on April

Xbox One beats PS4 in game streaming quality

Tue, 03/04/2014 - 12:30pm

The launch of live game streaming on the Xbox One is still a week away, but Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb took to Twitch last night to show off why the feature has been mysterious absent for the past few months. Reddit user rotj used Twitch Analyzer on the Xbox One stream last night and discovered that the quality of the stream is noticeably better than that of the PlayStation 4. The resolution of the broadcast was determined to be 1280 x 720, running at 30 frames-per-second and a bitrate of 2.5 Mbps. A typical PS4 stream comes in at 960 x 540, 30 fps and around 1.7 Mbps. Along with the boost in quality, Xbox One streamers will also be able
