LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Gerry Hambling, the British film editor whose credits include "Midnight Express," "Pink Floyd: The Wall" and "Mississippi Burning," died February 5 in England. He was 86. Hambling, who entered the film industry at 16 as an editor's apprentice, was a longtime collaborator of director Alan Parker, editing 14 of his films. "He was undoubtedly one of the finest film editors that the British film industry has produced," Parker remembered. ...

Starz network extends pay-TV deal for Sony movies

(Reuters) - Sony Pictures Entertainment and U.S. pay-TV network Starz extended an agreement that gives Starz exclusive rights to Sony movies through 2021, blocking Netflix Inc from striking a deal with the Hollywood studio. Netflix signed a landmark agreement in December to stream first-run Walt Disney Co movies, and CEO Reed Hastings told analysts in January that his video subscription service was interested in securing the rights to Sony movies as well. Starz shares climbed 7.3 percent to $17.89 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. Netflix shares fell 2 percent to $177.23, also on Nasdaq. ...

"Mean Girls" director Mark Waters will direct the film, which should begin shooting this summer. The Weinstein Company wants to release it on Valentine's Day, 2014, which is also a long weekend due to President's Day. It marks the independent distributor's first foray into the lucrative young adult market. The book series, which includes six titles thus far, has registered 8 million sales worldwide. ...

Average movie ticket price hits record high

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Movie-going got more expensive last year with ticket prices hitting record highs in 2012, the National Association of Theatre Owners said Monday. The average ticket price hit $7.96, a three-cent bump from last year, but still the biggest annual number when not adjusted for inflation. For the fourth quarter of 2012, 3D releases, such as "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "Rise of the Guardians," pushed ticket prices to $8.05. That was a 3.4 percent bump from the $7.78 cents audiences shelled out on average over the three months ending in September. ...
