By Steve Pond LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Hollywood is finally embracing the Los Angeles Film Festival. Studios once reluctant to showcase top films at LAFF, which officially opens on Thursday night in downtown L.A. after a pre-festival screening of "Man of Steel" on Wednesday night, have begun to see its value as a low-pressure showcase for movies with awards aspirations. The turnaround comes after careful wooing by festival organizers and successful debuts of films including "The Kids Are Alright," "Animal Kingdom" and "A Better Life," all of which went on to earn Oscar nominations. ...

By Tony Maglio LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Tuesday was a big day for super dude-y movie posters of upcoming Zach Snyder action flicks. First, Mondo released two sets of posters for sale inspired by "Man of Steel" by artists Ken Taylor and Martin Ansin. Taylor's poster depicts a young Clark Kent running through a field towards his farmhouse. The sparing use of color - only the boy's red cape - pops the innocent, yet dramatic rural scene. The more traditional comic book movie poster by Ansin shows the hero in space, hovering above the Earth that he has sworn to protect. ...

By Brent Lang LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Star-studded apocalypse comedy "This Is the End" racked up a sterling $2.2 million in late night shows on Tuesday, according to studio estimates. Screenings for the Sony release kicked off at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at 2,300 theaters. It expands to 3,055 locations on Wednesday. Though not on the level of an "Iron Man 3" or "Fast & the Furious 6," the results are strong, considering that the film carries substantially lower production costs and less brand recognition. Its gross is roughly in line with the $1. ...

By Jeff Sneider LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Oscar winner Sandra Bullock is in early discussions to play Miss Hannigan in Sony and Overbrook Entertainment's remake of "Annie," two individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap. Hannigan, of course, is the mean woman who runs the orphanage where Annie and her friends live. Carol Burnett played the role in the original 1982 film, and Sony has sought to cast an actress with comedic chops and international appeal. What's especially interesting about Bullock's potential casting is that she initially passed on the role. ...

NEW YORK (AP) — The Earth has been coming to an end with comic frequency. We've seen tsunamis sweep the oceans ("2012"), the world freeze over ("The Day After Tomorrow") and a rogue planet bear down ("Melancholia"). So many have been patrolling a desolate Earth — Will Smith ("After Earth"), Tom Cruise ("Oblivion"), a cute cleanup robot ("WALL-E") — that even the post-apocalyptic world is getting crowded.
