"A Hologram For the King" was a finalist for the National Book Award when it was published by McSweeney's last year. Favreau will direct the film from his own script about a chef who loses his job and decides to open a food truck. Favreau will also star as the chef with Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr. and John Leguizamo filling out the cast. Carol Burnett played the role in the original 1982 film, and Sony has sought to cast an actress with comedic chops and international appeal. The comic book, Action Comics No. 1 from June 1938, was the first appearance of the all-American superhero by writer Jerry Siegel and illustrator Joe Shuster.
