'The Grandmaster' dominates Hong Kong Film Awards

Martial arts fantasy "The Grandmaster" enjoyed a bonanza Sunday with 12 wins at the Hong Kong Film Awards including best movie and best director for Wong Kar-wai. It was Wong's third win at the prestigious event after 1990s cult hits -- Days of Being Wild, and Chungking Express. "I am proud to be part of Hong Kong cinema," he said paying homage to his home in a brief media session after the glittering ceremony. The action epic inspired by the life of kungfu master Yip Man secured accolades in most of the major categories, including best screenplay and best cinematography.

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Marvel's red-white-and-blue superhero soared to a second straight box office win in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," beating out new animated movie "Rio 2," the story of a family of Brazilian birds on a trip to the Amazon. Walt Disney Co's "Captain America," which set an April ticket sales record when it opened a week ago, pulled in another $41.4 million from Friday to Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters. The "Rio" sequel from 20th Century Fox debuted with $39 million in ticket sales, according to estimates from tracking firm Rentrak. ...

Cannes film festival organisers will on Thursday fire the starting gun for this year's Riviera movie extravaganza when they unveil the films chosen to compete for its top Palme d'Or prize. Ryan Gosling, Catherine Deneuve, Ken Loach, Meryl Streep, Gerard Depardieu, Woody Allen, Robert Pattinson and Jean-Luc Godard are just a few of the names being touted to tread the red carpet this year. Loach, one of cinema's most celebrated directors, won the Palme d'Or in 2006 and is widely tipped to return to Cannes with "Jimmy's Hall", especially if, as expected, it turns out to be his last feature film.

Foster, 27, a three-time Pro Bowl selection in his five-year pro career, is one of the sport's noted underdog success stories, having been passed over in the 2009 draft after playing at the University of Tennessee. Foster spoke with Reuters alongside his "Draft Day" co-star, Terry Crews, who played briefly in the NFL before turning to acting. A Los Angeles judge on Friday approved a settlement between the estranged wife of late golden era Hollywood star Mickey Rooney and the conservator of his estate, ending a legal tussle over where the actor will be buried, the conservator's attorney said. The final book in the "Divergent" trilogy will be split into two movies, Lions Gate said on Friday, following the same formula the studio used for the upcoming final installments of "The Hunger Games" series. "Divergent," a dystopian thriller based on the young adult book series by author Veronica Roth, stars Shailene Woodley and was released last month, grossing $116.6 million so far at the U.S. box office. Lions Gate will release the final two installments of "The Hunger Games" franchise, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" starring Jennifer Lawrence, in November, followed by the second part in November 2015. "The Hunger Games" series has so far grossed $1.5 billion in global ticket sales.

The Spanish actor is the latest addition to the star-studded cast of Sean Penn's "The Last Face." The romance, which will be filmed on location in Africa, will also feature Charlize Theron and French actress Adèle Exarchopoulos. "The Last Face" will focus on two doctors, played by Javier Bardem and Charlize Theron, who are doing humanitarian relief work in Africa. Adèle Exarchopoulos ("Blue is the Warmest Color") will play a journalist in the feature. The feature will also bring Charlize Theron and Sean Penn together for their first professional collaboration;
